Secure Remote Access
USS have brought together two highly secure applications to form a
remote access solution that meet the strict criteria that public
organisations such as the Police, NHS and local government have to work
to. Public and private sector organisations have a legal duty to keep
our private information secure, and a financial imperative to prevent
leakage of intellectual property. As a reseller, USS provide these
products including a proof of concept, associated consultancy,
installation and full support after the installation either individually
or as a fully customised, integrated secure solution that has been
signed off for use within the NHS to provide Outlook Web Access across
public networks without a physical token and without the use of VPNs.
Two Factor Authentication without tokens
Two factor authentication is essential in building a secure
infrastructure. However, the initial investment in possibly thousands of
tokens, and the ongoing cost to replace lost tokens is a huge
commitment. When adding the time it takes staff to administer the
system, replacing lost tokens, registering new tokens and performing
synchronisation the cost of two-factor authentication can spiral well
beyond the initial quotation.
The solution is to utilise your mobile phone. A token can be sent via
SMS to a pre-registered mobile telephone in order to provide the 2nd factor
for authentication. As soon as the token is used, a replacement token is
sent in advance to ensure that it is available even if you next need to
login from somewhere where there is no signal.
With virtually zero administration and user self-enrolment, and no need
for VPNs, IT staff will not get swamped by requests for new tokens or
for help logging in. If a user needs a new token, they can simply leave
the token field blank. A new token will then be sent directly to their
phone.
The product, SecureAccess by SecurEnvoy protects many systems in this
way such as Microsoft Outlook Web Access and Citrix Presentation Server.
Indeed any application that is based on IIS, or that uses RADIUS
authentication. SecureAccess is a non-intrusive secure application that
enforces two factor authentication in a variety of different ways.
OWA Attachment Security
In addition to secure access methods, many governmental organisations
have strict guidelines on attachments. Email read from outside the
organisation may be cached by the web browser. If email were to be read
on a public computer, that information may remain in the cache leaving
potentially extremely sensitive data available to all who know how to
look for it.
The other half of the solution is an application that renders
attachments in a non-cacheable format. This means that once the browser
is closed or logged off, there is no trace of the information contained
in the attachment.
This also means that attachments can be read on public PCs even if they
are in a format that is not supported on that PC. For example a Word
document may be read without the PC having Microsoft Word installed.
Security is fully configurable. Locations may be set up from which
attachments may be downloaded, whilst other locations may only be able
to securely view attachments.
Integration
A solution comprising both of these elements along with a number of
customisations to meet an organisations exact needs and further increase
security may be the most cost effective method of providing mobile users
access to email and other resources that meets the strict requirements
of NHS trusts, other governmental organisations, or for companies that
deal in highly sensitive information.
